SOLO EXHIBITION
Joi Murugavell
Nana Banana
August 28, 2024 — September 22, 2024
Insa1010 x Gallery Banditrazos
Seoul, Korea
In her second solo show in Korea, Joi Murugavell goes back to fond memories of her nana. “Lucky are those who have had the wisdom and love of a grandma. I knew such a lady bearing the title of nana. I called her nana banana and she called me her juicy orange. It’s difficult and perhaps untruthful to summarise a set of memories into solid words. One thing I do remember strongly is she never made me feel the pressure to be juicy. The rest of my memories of her seem to change and morph depending on the day I’m having, so I’m afraid that’s all I can say about this” - Joi Murugavell
Nana Banana showcased recent paintings by Joi Murugavell as well as a touching interactive area where guests were invited to leave notes and thoughts to their grandparents. In addition to the show, a DOSN programmer was in place over 3 days throughout the exhibition. Guests participated in a Q&A via Zoom with Joi in her studio in Strasbourg, France. The Q&A sessions were open, where tears and laughter were present. All notes left by guests to their grandparents are now with Joi Murugavell in France, she is looking forward to creating an installation with them in the future.
