Rajan Lee: What have you learnt from making a recent piece of art?
Joi: This is a recent piece I made. I think I’ll call it “Noise Cancelling Eye”. The paint on the eyes was still wet when I dropped it, smudging one eye. It sat on my dining table for weeks, one day it told me a story. All this noise I’ve faced, and continue to face, is my own doing as I’ve been using the wrong organ as a noise cancelling device.
I’ve always tried to cut down on noise with my ears, trying not to listen and recently quite literally with noise cancelling headphones. But what I really needed to do was change (and face) how I saw things. As noise is really the loudest through my vision.
